Sturm was the founder and the rector of the Gymnase Protestant in Strasbourg. He was involved in the creation of religious policies and as a diplomat attempted to mediate between France and the German Protestant rulers in order to improve the situation of the Huguenots. Weniger bekannt, aber ebenso wichtig fur die Geschichte Europas, ist das religionspolitische Engagement dieses Anhangers der Reformation: als Diplomat versuchte er, zwischen Frankreich und den deutschen evangelischen Fursten zu vermitteln, um die Lage der Hugenotten zu verbessern; als Anwalt einer gewissen Toleranz geriet er in Konflikt mit der zweiten Generation der Reformatoren in Strassburg, die die Reformierten in ihrer Stadt nicht mehr dulden wollten.Seit der Biographie Charles Schmidts 1855 hat keine Studie das Gesamtwirken Sturms erfasst.
